POLIO

As of May 28, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative reports two WPV1 cases in Pakistan and five WPV1-positive environmental samples in Afghanistan. In Africa, one cVDPV3 case and two cVDPV2-positive environmental samples have been reported. Six cVDPV2 cases have been confirmed in Yemen. Additionally, one cVDPV2-positive environmental sample has been reported in Germany and two in Papua New Guinea.

 

H5N1

U.S.

As of June 2, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports no new cases of person-to-person transmission of H5N1 have been reported in the United States.The total remains at 70 confirmed cases and one death.

UK

A UK lab study, published as a preprint on medRxiv on May 28, finds that H5N1 avian influenza remains infectious in raw cow and sheep milk for over 24 hours at room temperature and more than a week when refrigerated. The findings raise concerns about potential transmission through unpasteurized dairy products and occupational exposure in dairies.

 

MPOX

Africa

Sierra Leone: As of May 25, 2025, Sierra Leone has reported 3,140 confirmed mpox cases, according to the World Health Organization. This represents a continued surge, with 492 new cases added since May 18. The outbreak remains on an upward trajectory, with the majority of cases reported in recent weeks.

Uganda: As of May 18, 2025, Uganda has reported a cumulative total of 5,113 laboratory-confirmed mpox cases this year, according to the World Health Organization. This marks an increase of 141 cases since the previous update on May 18, when 4,972 cases was confirmed. While case numbers continue to rise, the pace of weekly increase has slowed compared to previous weeks, suggesting a possible stabilization.

 

MEASLES

U.S.

As of May 30, 2025, Center for Disease Control reports a total of 1,088 confirmed measles cases in the U.S. in 2025. 12 % of cases have required hospitalization (133 cases of 1,088), and three deaths have been reported. 

As of June 3, 2025, the Texas Department of State Health Services reports 742 measles cases this year - an increase of 14 since May 23. 

As of May 28, 2025, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has confirmed three additional measles cases linked to a recent outbreak associated with Denver International Airport, bringing the total to five. All cases are connected to the initial exposure at the airport in late April. Officials warn of potential further transmission due to the high traffic in the area.

Canada.

As of June 2, 2025, Canada has reported 2,755 measles cases, including 2,429 laboratory-confirmed, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada. The majority of cases (71%) have been reported in Ontario. Of the total, 761 cases (28%) occurred in adults aged 18 and over. In all, 83% were unvaccinated, and 8% required hospitalization. Genotype D8 remains the most frequently detected strain.

 

Covid-19

The World Health Organization reports a sharp rise in global COVID-19 activity, largely driven by increases in the Eastern Mediterranean, South-East Asia, and Western Pacific regions. A new variant, NB.1.8.1, has been identified in 22 countries and now represents over 10% of global sequences. WHO emphasizes the importance of continued surveillance and vaccination, especially among high-risk groups.
