POLIO
As of May 21, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative reports one cVDPV2-positive environmental sample in Germany and one in Papua New Guinea. In Africa, a total of two cVDPV2 cases and one environmental sample have been reported.
H5N1
U.S.
As of May 23, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports no new cases of person-to-person transmission of H5N1 have been reported in the United States.The total remains at 70 confirmed cases and one death.
MPOX
Africa
Sierra Leone: As of May 18, 2025, Sierra Leone has reported 2,648 confirmed mpox cases, according to the World Health Organization. This represents a continued surge, with 603 new cases added since May 11. The outbreak remains on an upward trajectory, with the majority of cases reported in recent weeks.
Uganda: As of May 18, 2025, Uganda has reported a cumulative total of 4,972 laboratory-confirmed mpox cases this year, according to the World Health Organization. This marks an increase of 309 cases since the previous update on May 11, when 4,663 cases had been confirmed. While case numbers continue to rise, the pace of weekly increase has slowed compared to previous weeks, suggesting a possible stabilization.
MEASLES
U.S.
As of May 23, 2025, Center for Disease Control reports a total of 1,046 confirmed measles cases in the U.S. in 2025. 12 % of cases have required hospitalization (127 cases of 1,046), and three deaths have been reported.
As of May 23, 2025, the Texas Department of State Health Services reports 728 measles cases this year - an increase of 10 since May 16.
Canada.
As of May 26, 2025, Canada has reported 2,515 measles cases, including 2,197 laboratory-confirmed, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada. The majority of cases (73%) have been reported in Ontario. Of the total, 678 cases (27%) occurred in adults aged 18 and over. In all, 82% were unvaccinated, and 7% required hospitalization. A total of 91% of cases were acquired within Canada and are epidemiologically or virologically linked. Genotype D8 remains the most frequently detected strain.
