POLIO

As of May 14, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative reports eleven WPV1-positive environmental samples in Pakistan. In Africa, a total of twelve cVDPV2 cases and six cVDPV2-positive environmental samples have been reported. 

 

H5N1

U.S.

As of May 16, 2025, no new cases of person-to-person transmission of H5N1 have been reported in the United States. The total remains at 70 confirmed cases and one death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

 

MPOX

Africa

Sierra Leone: As of May 11, 2025, Sierra Leone has reported 2,045 confirmed mpox cases, according to the World Health Organization. This marks a sharp increase from 1,387 cases reported just one week earlier, on May 4. The outbreak continues to accelerate, with most cases recorded in recent weeks.
While the outbreak accelerates in Sierra Leone, several other countries, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, have seen a recent decline in weekly cases, as illustrated in Figure 3.4.1.

As of May 11, 2025, Uganda has reported a cumulative total of 4,663 laboratory-confirmed mpox cases in 2025, according to the World Health Organization. This marks an increase from 4,590 cases reported on April 13, 2025.

 

MEASLES

U.S.

As of May 16, 2025, Center for Disease Control reports a total of 1,024 confirmed measles cases in the U.S. in 2025. 13 % of cases have required hospitalization (128 cases of 1,024), and three deaths have been reported. 

As of May 16, 2025, the Texas Department of State Health Services reports 718 measles cases this year - an increase of 9 since May 9. The weekly increase has declined for the fourth consecutive week, suggesting a potential slowdown in the outbreak’s momentum.
